Offensive? It depends!

Started by: tonker (27954)

Well, this morning I went to Lidl's in St.Helens, to see if they had any coal. As I approached the entrance, I noticed that they were promoting the islamic festival of ramadan on huge posters in the store windows.
No consideration shown as to the offence this could cause to Christians. And that's after the Advertising Standards Authority laid down rules regarding the advertising of Easter, to avoid causing offence to muslims, along with a head-teacher being told to stop their school's 'Easter Bonnet Parade' to avoid offence?

I got back in the car and went to Aldi's instead!

i don't understand why a supermarket would do deals for ramerdaners because they abstain from eating and therefore will buy less so, Why would they encourage ramerdaning

They abstain from eating at certain time.

Suhoor: This is the pre-dawn meal, eaten before sunrise. It’s the meal that sustains you throughout the day while fasting.
Iftar: This is the meal eaten after sunset to break the fast. It’s a joyous moment when families and communities come together to share food and gratitude.

At Easter, Christians celebrate a mon being nailed to a cross and left to die, and the day they did it on is called {{Good Friday}} but what is bloody well good about it

And then they say on the Monday he woke from the dead , and slid a heavy stone from the entrance to where he was, and then drifted up and away, I bet he did too, a likely story

Mmmm.... getting a bit of worrying debate. I don't know the full details but hope that in a progressively becoming multi cultural Britain we could celebrate all festivals without predudice. White Christians are happy to join in with Chisese New Year (and vice versa). Plus, Muslim restaurants displays happy Christmas posters and we generally get on well with our cultures and religions. I haven't really come across any problems... it appears to be the media who are devil's advocate.
I do acknowledge the odd challenge and I'm not really aware of discrimination against white Christians, but there is a huge community onf black Christians.
I always prefer to discuss rather than condemn. After all the ethnicity is changing and we have got to deal with it amiably.
Oh heck, I have a feeling where this is heading....

Me neither TTS.
Religion means nothing to me.
However I have every respect for those to whom religion does mean something and it doesn’t matter what that religion happens to he.

Seems to be a problem for some in Greek though

Your 'religion' is your lifestyle. If you live in a Christian country you lead a Christian lifestyle, like it or not.
That's one of the complaints heard from muslims living in the UK. They don't like being forced to lead a Christian lifestyle.
Saying the Lord's Prayer, parrot-fashion, is not religion.

I live in a country (the Uk) what religion does the Uk follow?, who states the Uk should follow a specific religion? and who enforces myself (and Muslim)s to follow it?

As far as i am aware we are a secular country and as such all are free to follow any religion you may choose......am I wrong?

If so please explain how and why?

We have been married nearly 49 years but in the churches eyes at the time did not recognise our marriage I was a Catholic and my wife was C of E. We had a church ceremony in a C of E church but in the eyes of both churches we where not married ,I did not change my religion and did not have a ceremony in the Catholic church. So now we are non practising Christians and don't celebrate any parts of the church year but do buy presents for the Grandkids at Xmas

Correct about many Muslims not wanting to live a non Muslim lifestyle in our country, but if you go many of the Muslin countries you have abide by the laws of their country.

My Wife and I are friends of a family, where the Husband together with his Wife, young Son and Daughter lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for five years where his Wife and Daughter had to wear a hihab and they had to walk behind him whenever they went out of the British compound.

They were there at the time that our television media caused a diplomatic incident by showing a young couple being beheaded in front of a baying crowd which their media showed in full on their television which had interupted cartoons being watched by their children.

My friend and his Wife were then subjected to verbal and near physical abuse when they attempted to go to work and were advised to stay in the compound while our goverment apologised to their government for showing the beheading.

As a result, my friend and his family made arrangements to come home because of what they experienced in both the incident and the hypocrisy in other things.

In contrast, they can find the time in our democratic country of free speech to go out on the streets to hold protests against the Jewish people, desicrate their graves, wave flags of their own countries, support terrorist organisations like Hamas on the pretence of wanting a cease fire and peace.

And what exactly has that got to do with you opening post objecting to seeing Ramadan posters in the window of Lidil? and all the other anti-Muslim sentiment contained in it?

Or are you just diverting and attempting to change the subject and focusing on semantics and trivial details…....again?

Whilst we are on about Muslims, Lee Anderson, that Yorkshire Tory MP with his own show on GB News, has managed to get himself suspended from the Conservative Part for being naughty

"Speaking on GB News Mr Anderson said: "I don't actually believe that the Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is they've got control of Khan and they've got control of London… He's actually given our capital city away to his mates.""

Is that racist ?

Tonker,
'The UK is not a country'... agreed.
Christian country... yes, sort of.
I only say this because (please tell me if I'm wrong) I belive at the last census Christian for the first time wasn't indicated as the major religion.
Even so Tonker, I do feel that many people of a Christian background have either indicated non-religious, other, or even Klingon., instead of being honest.
However, I do feel we should be allowed to keep our traditions.
The thing that worries me is influence from America. Nobody collects for the Guy anymore but we now have trick or treat. Then there are baby showers and all manner of Americanisms. We have lost the May Queen and many more traditions.
To end with a bit of humour... My mate who is from Lincolnshire complained that an old tradition in his village (smoking the fool) was banned due to pedantic H&S legislation. It involved choosing the village's biggest idiot, putting him on a rope swing and constantly swinging him through the smoke of a large dampened fire. You can make your own mind up about that!

I agree with what JR has said, especially about Americanisms. Cheer leaders, cookies instead of biscuits, cup cakes instead of fairy cakes, prom nights, ad nauseum; and even poor old Guy Fawkes gets burned at the stake when Robert Catesby was the main instigator and Guy was just guarding the gunpowder barrels.

I recognise no religions as every war ever waged was due in some part down to religion, so is a load of old cobblers to me, same as politics. We are a faulty species inhabiting this planet but, oddly enough, we're all supposedly human. How many animals do you know of that truly hates and despises others of their own kind with such a passion?

Oh, and UK is not a country in itself, it's the United Kingdom of the countries England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

I heard an interesting story just today From A bloke i know who lives in Snowden Ave, Lots of vehicles come from Bolton, Bury and other areas to the Mosque at Poolstock, with limited parking the cars spill out and use Snowden Ave to park where there is a cut through walkway to the Mosque, A few of the elder Prayer leaders walked down Snowden ave asking residents not to street park on payer days to ease the parking problem for the attending Muslims, I'm not going to type the answer he gave because it would breach the rules of this board but, The Muslims did not get a favourable reply,

TTS about what Lee Anderson said if you swapped out the word Islamists to Jewish would that be racist ?? i find it a good bench mark to decide if what someone says is racist or not ....

But the only reason he was not fired was because the tory leadership believe he represents a certain demographic who they are trying to keep from moving to the reform party.......
